This trek is a famous destination among Himalayan adventure lovers. Lying in the Shey Phoksundo National Park, Dolpo offers unique experience in terms of its landscape, geography and culture. It is also home to the lake in the highest altitude in the world, the Shey Phoksundo Lake. Untouched by modernity you will find true Himalayan lifestyle predominantly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. So if you want to be amidst some remote wilderness, this is a perfect fit for you. If you are lucky enough you may even sight the elusive snow leopard.

Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, Katmandu

You will be met and greeted with a traditional welcome by our representatives and be transferred to your hotel.A brief orientation along with the necessary documentation will be carried out by your guide.

Sightseeing in Kathmandu

After breakfast your tour around Kathmandu will commence where you will be accompanied by a guide of your lingual preference. The tour will include a visit to the following places:
  • Boudhhanath: A major Buddhist stupa located at the north eastern outskirts of Kathmandu.
  • Pashupatinath: The most revered temple by Hindus in Nepal, the temple carries a significance of mystical proportions and is a site to many important life events of Hindus.
  • Swayambhunath: Sitting atop a hill, it is the most prominent Buddhist pilgrimage site in Nepal and is one of many sites of Nepal included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
  • Kathmandu Durbar Square: Durbar Square or the Palace Square is ancient courtyard the then Malla Kings of Kathmandu Valley which is abundant is breathtaking architecture.

Kathmandu- Nepalgunj Flight

We will take an early morning flight to Neplagunj lying in the western part of Nepal.

Nepalgunj-Juphal Flight-Dunai Trek

Today we will take an early morning flight to Jhupahal which lies at the foothills of the Himalayas. Then on we will trek towards Dunai which should take around 3 hours.

Dunai-Rohagaon Trek

Today we make our way towards Rohagaon, literally meaning eyebrow, passing through the Thulo Bheri Valley. Along the way you will be able to witness the majesty of the Kagmara Peak. In Rohagaon, many local are involved in the production of a lotus like plant called “chuk” that is used to make vinegar and medicines.

Rohagaon-Reji Trek

Today we head towards the village of Reji which is located to the opposite of the Suli Gad river. We will pass through the entrance of the Phoksundo National Park on our way.

Reji-Phoksundo Lake Trek

Today we will make a trek towards the picturesque Phoksundo Lake passing through the Ringmo village. There you will also be able to marvel at the beautiful Suligad waterfall, one of the highest in the world.

Exploration Day at Phoksundo Lake

Today we will take some much deserved rest and also explore the Phoksundo Lake, which is a picturesque lake and is located at the highest altitude in the world.

Trek to Phoksundo Khola

On this day we will trek to the Phoksundo Khola passing through some lush green meadows and scenic views of the mountains.

Trek to Phoksundo Bhanjyang

On this day we will head towards the scenic Phoksundo Pass which should take around 6-7 hours.

Trek to Shey Gompa Via Kang La Pass

Today we will make an initial arduous ascent to the Kang La Pass from where you will be able to witness the panoramic view of the valley below. Then on we will descend towards Shey Gompa, the total length of the trek being 5-6 hours.

Mountain Kora and trek to Shey Village

We have decided to postpone our passing under the red chorten that marks the entrance to Shey by deviating off of the main path and join the pilgrimage route that circumambulates the sacred Crystal Mountain. Our camping spot on Day 12 will depend on natural water sources. What an epic approach into the fabled Shey Gompa! Our camp for the next two nights will be made just below the gompa on a wonderful grassy campsite.’I flew through the sky on a snow lion And there, among the clouds, I performed miracles. But not even the greatest of celestial feats can equal once rounding on foot this Crystal Mountain.’ – Drotob Senge Yeshe (the lama)

Mountain Kora and trek to Shey Village

Exploration Day at Shey Gompa

The day will be devoted to exporing the Shey Gompa, also known as the crystal monastery. The lama of Shey resides at a red hermitage known as Tsakang gompa which is west of Shey. It is more of a retreat than a monastery. You will also have the opportunity to study the murals that describe the mythology of the crystal monastery.

Trek to Namduna Gaun via Saldang La

Today we will head towards the Namduna Gaun via an ascent to the Saldang La pass which should take around 6-7 hours.

Trek to Saldang

On this day we will trek for around 4-5 hours to reach Saldang. Saldang is the largest village in the inner Dolpo region and is an arid zone of the trans Himalayan Tibetan plateau.

Saldang-Yangze Gompa-Saldang Trek

Today we will trek for about 4-5 hours to reach the Yangze Gompa passing through the village of Tiling and Lurigaon. Then on we will make a return trek to Saldang.

Trek to Raka

On this day we head towards Raka, the last settlement before the first of the two high passes between here and Maduwa. On our way we will pass through Sibu, follow the Namgung Khola and cross hamlets such as Namdo.

Darsumna Dhobhan to Maduwa and exploration over Langmuse and Baga La passes to Maduwa Village

We now enter the true exploratory part of our trek. On days 19 to 23 (weather and group fitness permitting), we will attempt to follow ‘The Snow Leopard’ route across the high passes and uninhabited regions of Inner Dolpo. We will be  without a fixed itinerary as we will need to be flexible and allow for any unexpected eventualities. In the case where this route is not possible, we will follow an alternative route south into Dho Tarap Valley (details on this route are below).

Maduwa-Cheppak Trek

On this day we will head towards Cheppak which will take around 8 hours. On our way we will stopover for lunch at Rechi.

Trek to Jhuphal

We will begin the day in earnest with by initially headiong towards Shyanta, which is khown for its honey cultivation. Then on we will cross forests to reach Raktang and then trek for another 3 hours to reach Jhuphal.

Jhuphal-Nepalgunj-Kathmandu Flight

We will take an early morning scenic flight to Nepalgunj. Then we will take another connecting flight to Kathmandu.

You will have the day to yourself to indulge in activities of your preference; perhaps collecting some souvenirs to take a little part of Nepal back home might tempt you.

Final Departure

You will be taken from your hotel to the airport as per your schedule. You will reach the airport 2 hours prior to your flight. Finally, we return to Kathmandu for a farewell dinner.
